GEM Driver Assessment

Posted on October 31st, 2018 by GEM Motoring Assist

The Driver Assessment scheme developed by GEM Motoring Assist and The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) is an excellent way of ensuring that your driving skills are as good as they used to be. It is not a test, so you will not feel under pressure. Our examiners are here to help!

Q) Why should I take a driving assessment?

A) There are lots of good reasons. You may feel the need to review your driving if you have undergone sudden changes in lifestyle or personal circumstances. Or you may simply be keen to develop your skills in an enjoyable and informal environment.

Q) Is it a test and could I fail?

A) No and No. There is no pass or fail at the end of the assessment. However, you will receive an honest appraisal of your driving. The person carrying out the assessment is typically a qualified advanced police driver. He or she will provide a written report with recommendations on where you may wish to focus some attention.

By the way, the report remains confidential and is not provided to any other person or organisation.

You will also receive a certificate to confirm you have undertaken the assessment and you will be given advice about how to further improve your driving, perhaps by signing up for an advanced driving course.

Q) What will happen during the assessment?

A) The assessment will take about an hour, beginning and ending at a location convenient for you, at a time that suits you. Expect it to be relaxed and informal – remember it is not a test!

The assessment is completed in your own car, using road types that are most appropriate to your usual journeys. Some slow maneuvering, parking and reversing will be included.

Q) How do I prepare for the assessment?

A) The assessment is an evaluation of your driving ability as it is now, so no major preparation is needed. However, it is always a good idea to brush up on your knowledge of the Highway Code and of course to ensure your car is in a roadworthy condition.

Q) How much does the assessment cost and how do I book?

A) The cost is just £55. You can book online, call our colleagues at RoSPA on 0121 248 2099 or download an Experienced Driver Application Form (Word). Send it to RoSPA with the fee and a RoSPA assessor will contact you in two to three weeks to discuss a time, date and venue to meet.

Q) How do I benefit from the assessment?

A) As well as helping you take a renewed pride in your driving, the assessment will provide confidence to you and your loved ones that you remain safe on the road.

It could also prove to be the first step in developing your driving to allow further training and advanced qualifications.
