With research showing that deaths and injuries caused by accidents on motorway hard shoulders leapt by almost a fifth between 2005 and 2007, Road
Safety champion GEM Motoring Assist (GEM) has decided to offer all motorists a free guide to coping with breakdowns.
David Williams, Chief Executive of GEM said, “We are concerned that fatal and serious accidents on motorway hard shoulders appear to be increasing. We have, therefore, decided to offer our free breakdown information guide to any motorists requesting a copy”.
The booklet which has been endorsed by GEM’s President Viscount Simon, Road Safety Parliamentarian of the Year in 2008, contains detailed advice about what to do in the event of a breakdown on both motorways and minor roads. It also contains some basic emergency aid information provided by the British Red Cross.
David Williams added, “GEM has been voted winners and runners up in the 2008 and 2009 Driver Power Surveys of UK breakdown cover providers. This
endorsement from the many thousands of readers of Auto Express magazine, makes us the leading breakdown organisation in the UK and puts us in a unique position to offer advice about how breakdowns should be managed safely. I hope that motorists will request a free copy of this booklet and adhere to the advice given”.
