Festival of the Unexceptional

Held on the same weekend as the Silverstone Classic, a slightly more left-field and more light-hearted car event was hosted several miles away on Whittlebury Hall’s Golf Course.

Sponsored by Hagerty Insurance, the Festival of the Unexceptional celebrated the opposite end of the old car spectrum, in an event where Ferraris, Maseratis and Porsches were certainly not appropriate.

Rather than celebrating the subjects of glamourous posters that once adorned the bedroom walls of Britain’s youth, the Festival of the Unexceptional championed everyday cars that once littered our streets; vehicles that, ironically, have become rarer than most of the glitterati that could be heard tearing around the Silverstone circuit throughout last Saturday.

The event’s highlight was an informal Concours de Ordinaire, in which the runner up was a Fiat 127 and the winner was a restored Ford Escort. The Peoples’ Choice award was presented to the owner of an immaculate Hillman Avenger estate.
