Tax exemption moves forward

It is no joke. Recognising classic cars as being part of our motoring heritage, vehicles over 40 years-old can have their tax classes changed to ‘Historic’, a process that is not done automatically, as you have to fill in your V5C and send it to the DVLA for it to be processed.

As of today, cars made prior to 1st January 1976, which includes some “P” registration vehicles, qualify for the Historic road tax class, which entitles their owners to pay nothing for their annual road tax (VED). However, this cut-off relates to the build date and not the registration date. Therefore, if your car was built in 1975 but was registered in 1976 (or later), you will have to provide evidence to support your application.
